"Who's the Man"
For the last 20 years Dan "Dan the Man" Humiston has worked with some of the biggest names in Hip Hop music. Lil Kim, Busta Rhymes, Mobb Deep, and an exceptional charismatic 300 plus MC from the Bronx who would make history as the first Puerto Rican to sell a million records with his classic debut Capital Punishment Yeah "Dan the Man" was there and so was that big ass terror squad chain....
(Gully TV) Before we get into the interview tell me where you from and how long you been a engineer?
(Dan) Born in VA and grew up in Connecticut, I moved to NYC in 1996 to start my career as an engineer.
(Gully TV) Now did you become a Hip Hop Engineer on purpose or are you just a engineer that the Hip Hop community gravitated to?
(Dan) Growing up I had a lot of musical influences but Hip Hop has always been special to me. I work with all genres of music but working in hip hop is just very natural.
(Gully TV) The walls of your studio are covered with plaques from some legendary MC's how often do you get a chance to work with artists outside of hip hop?
(Dan) The majority of the projects, I work on are hip hop and r&b but I do have a lot of other projects that are not. I always enjoy a challenge of working in a genre that is not my everyday line of work. You casn check out Austin Wender and Elana J & The Grinders which are 2 different type of rock projects I am working on.
(Gully TV) OK heres the question everybody wants me to ask Capital Punishment classic album by hip hop icon Big Pun what was it like working with Big Pun?
(Dan) Working with Pun was incredible for so many reasons. He was an amazing talent, a great guy,
and funny as a motherfucker. Everyday he would come in he would snap on me, working on that album was a pivotal point in my career because I was transitioning from an assistant to an engineer, So it was great to be around him in both roles, Most days his familly and the squad would be there, it was a great environment to create and I think you can hear that on the album. Pun knew what he wanted and how he wanted things to sound and had no problem translating that to producers and engineers.
(Gully TV) Did he come to your studio with big ass chains on?
(Dan) That chain was always in the building!!! It was funny cuz he didn't wear it in the booth and you would see everybody wearing it or holding it!
(Gully TV) Have you ever recorded a diss record for anyone? and if you did would you tell me?
(Dan) There have been plenty of jabs in songs that I have recorded for pretty much every one but the only diss song I worked on was one night Ma$e came in and just went in on Jay Z
I never saw it on an album but I'm sure it's out there some where.
(Gully TV) Let's talk about these platinum and gold records, how does the engineer get compensated if he records a platinum record. I mean do you eat off of it too or you just get paid for studio time and that's it?
(Dan) That's all about how you negotiate your situation. That's why it is so important to take care of your business before you start work on a project! When I was younger and first go in the business all I wanted was a plaque on my wall, until you realize what you would have in the bank if you just got even a tiny piece of over a million records sold! even a penny on a million records is $10,000. Handle your business!!!!!
(Gully TV) In your opinion who's the most gifted most dynamic MC you ever recorded?
(Dan) I'm sorry that is such a tuff question to answer. I have worked with some of the most gifted MC's ever and they all have their own unique flair I can't narrow that down to one.
(Gully TV) Have you ever bought a actual Big Pun CD even tho you were apart of its production?
(Dan) Oh yea!!! I buy every CD I am apart of, number one just as a memento and also check question 7.
(Gully TV) Any New Year's Resolutions Dan?
(Dan) 2016 is going to be a great year! I would just like to get to work with more great talents and get more people to hear what I can bring to their sound.
